Government of Canada Funded G8 Project
Progress Update
History
When the federal government
announced that the next G8 Summit would be held in June 2010 in Muskoka, a
group of dedicated volunteers from Baysville got together to put forward an
application for funding to support construction of a bandstand and public
washrooms for Baysville. With a joint effort from the Baysville Riverfront
Group, Community Group and Horticultural Society a bid for funding was
launched back in June 2009. While the federal government allocated $ 50
million towards G8 Projects, applications received totaled roughly four
times this amount; however the comprehensive and collaborative Baysville bid
was successful and plans were immediately drawn up to set the project in
motion.
Mitchell Architects of
Huntsville won the design award and the subsequent contract tender was
awarded to Shertine Construction of Collingwood. Work commenced December 1st
2009 to erect an octagonal shaped bandstand and separate public washroom
facility in the newly amalgamated Grist Mill Park and Robertson Parkette
overlooking the Riverfront Docks.
Progress
The underground service
connections and foundation work for both structures have all been completed.
The washroom building is also now fully erected with walls and roof in place
and the building has been fully winter tarped and heated to allow completion
of the interior plumbing and finishes. The steel support structure has been
assembled on the bandstand foundation and roofing will take place shortly.
Everything appears well on
it’s way for completion by the March 31st 2010 deadline.
Landscaping for the site will
take place immediately following the snow melt and it’s expected that the
dedication ceremony will take place in May 2010 prior to the beginning of
the Summit.
